How do I count emissions from handling at a container freight station?
A container freight station burns diesel in reach stackers, forklifts and trucks and uses power for lights and offices. For the station that is Scope 1 and 2. For a shipper, the handling is part of transport and distribution, Category 4 or 9.
For the operator
- Diesel per month from fuel slips.
- Container moves per month, in TEU.
- Diesel divided by TEU gives a figure per move.
For the shipper
Ask the station for a figure per TEU, or estimate from its moves. The GLEC Framework counts logistics sites alongside transport legs.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
