What is a Core ESG rating and how is it linked to BRSR Core assurance?

A Core ESG rating is built only on data a company has had assured or audited by a third party. SEBI-registered raters offer it once the company has a BRSR Core. Unverified data can only appear as commentary in the rationale, so assured figures directly decide the score.

The rule

SEBI's master circular requires ESG rating providers to offer a Core ESG rating based on third-party assured or audited data disclosed by the company. Core ratings, the Core transition score and the Core combined score are offered once a Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report Core is available for the rated entity.

What happens to unverified data

The rationale for a Core rating may include commentary on data that has not been assured, so users know about it, but that data does not enter the Core rating itself. The aim is that users can act on the unverified information if they choose, without it changing the score.

Why assurance now has a price

Where suppliers fit

BRSR Core attributes include energy, emissions and waste figures. When a listed company extends assurance to its value chain, suppliers are asked for figures that can stand up to an assurer, with source documents behind them.

What Senseible does here

Senseible links every energy and fuel figure to the bill it came from, so an assurer can trace numbers back to documents. The assurance itself comes from an independent provider.
