Why must ESG mutual funds hold 65% of assets in companies with BRSR Core assurance?

SEBI requires ESG mutual fund schemes to keep at least 65% of assets in companies that file a comprehensive BRSR and have BRSR Core assurance, from 1 October 2024. Non-compliant schemes had until 30 September 2025, and could not add companies lacking assurance meanwhile. Unassured companies can fill only the remaining 35%.

The rule and its dates

Why SEBI did it

The circular says ESG investing needs consistent, comparable disclosures to help investors and prevent greenwashing. Tying most of an ESG fund's money to assured data means the fund's ESG claim rests on figures someone outside the company has checked.

Effect on listed companies

Effect on suppliers

BRSR Core includes energy, emissions and waste figures, and its value chain disclosures reach into suppliers. A listed buyer that wants ESG fund money has a reason to ask MSME suppliers for figures backed by documents.

What Senseible does here

Senseible traces each energy and fuel figure to its source bill, the kind of record a buyer's assurer can check when value chain data is reviewed.
