How is CO2 calculated for a COREX ironmaking unit?

Use a carbon mass balance: carbon in coal, coke and fluxes charged, minus carbon leaving in hot metal, slag and the export gas, times 44/12. The export gas carbon is counted where that gas is burnt, so it must not be counted twice.

How COREX differs

COREX gasifies non coking coal with oxygen in a melter gasifier and reduces ore in a shaft above it. It makes a large volume of carbon rich export gas that usually feeds a power plant or a DRI unit.

The balance

Where the export gas goes

If the gas is burnt in your own power plant, its CO2 sits in your Scope 1 there. If it goes to another company, it leaves your boundary, and the CBAM rules have their own treatment for waste gases exported from steel processes.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your fuel and electricity bills into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions your EU importer asks for, and its CBAM cost calculator estimates certificate cost from 2026 to 2034 for covered goods. Senseible does not verify emissions or file CBAM declarations.
