How are steel plant waste gases sent to a power plant treated under CBAM?

Blast furnace, COREX and converter gases carry carbon from the steel process. Under the CBAM monitoring rules their CO2 is attributed to the steel production process, with a correction for the electricity the gas generates. Keep metered gas volumes and composition to apply it.

Why it needs a rule

The carbon in waste gas comes from coke or coal used to make iron. Without a rule, emissions could be shifted to the power plant and out of the steel figure.

What to record

The exact correction is set in the CBAM implementing rules on calculating embedded emissions, which are amended from time to time. Confirm the version in force for your reporting year with your verifier.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your fuel and electricity bills into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions your EU importer asks for, and its CBAM cost calculator estimates certificate cost from 2026 to 2034 for covered goods. Senseible does not verify emissions or file CBAM declarations.
