Can carbon credits from Indian projects be used for CORSIA in its first phase?

Only if the project's units are on ICAO's eligible list and India has authorised them for CORSIA. For the first phase, 2024 to 2026, units must come from an ICAO approved programme such as Verra or Gold Standard, from emission reductions in 2021 to 2026, with a host country letter of authorisation and a corresponding adjustment.

The first phase tests

What this means for an Indian project

The authorisation step decides it. India grants authorisation project by project through its national designated authority for Article 6, and its published list of activities favours technologies such as renewable energy with storage and green hydrogen. Ordinary grid-connected solar or wind projects are not on that list. A project without India's letter of authorisation and attestation cannot supply first phase units, even if it is registered with an approved programme.

Checks before you sign a deal

  1. Find the current edition of ICAO's CORSIA Eligible Emissions Units document and confirm the programme and unit type.
  2. Check the vintage of each unit falls in 2021 to 2026.
  3. Ask for India's letter of authorisation naming CORSIA, and check the registry shows the CORSIA label.
  4. Agree in the contract who bears the risk if authorisation is delayed or withdrawn.

What Senseible does here

Senseible does not issue, label or register credits, and it does not handle Article 6 authorisations. Its records from fuel and electricity bills can support a project's baseline data.
