Can a Delhi business buy green power from its discom?
Only if DERC has set a green tariff for your category. The national Green Energy Open Access Rules, 2022 let any consumer ask its discom for renewable power at a green tariff fixed by the state commission. Ask BSES Rajdhani, BSES Yamuna, Tata Power-DDL or NDMC whether one is in force for you, and get the terms in writing.
What to ask your discom
- Is a green tariff in force for my tariff category under the current DERC order, and what is the premium per kWh?
- Can I cover a share of my consumption or must I cover all of it, and for what minimum period?
- How will the green units appear on my bill?
- Will you give me a yearly statement or certificate for the green units, confirming their attributes are not sold or claimed by anyone else?
If no green tariff is on offer
- Green energy open access from a generator, if your load is 100 kW or more. Read DERC's current open access regulations for the connection and metering conditions that apply in Delhi before you approach developers.
- Renewable energy certificates bought on a power exchange and retired for your units, which suit offices and hotels with no roof.
- Rooftop solar under net metering, where you own or control the roof.
Which option a buyer or guest will accept
Hotel groups and multinational tenants often report to group standards that name the instruments they accept. Before you pay a premium, ask whether a discom green tariff, Indian RECs or open access power is accepted, and what document they want each year.
What it does to your Scope 2
Location-based Scope 2 is unchanged by any of these: all units consumed times the grid factor. Market-based Scope 2 falls only for units covered by a document that conveys the renewable attribute to you for your reporting period.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads your BSES, Tata Power-DDL or NDMC bill for billing period, tariff category, sanctioned load and units, and reports location-based Scope 2 at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh (CEA, version 21.0). It reports market-based Scope 2 alongside when you record the green units or retired RECs with their certificate.
- Does a green tariff make Scope 2 zero?
- Green tariff or RECs, which is cheaper
- How to buy RECs in India
- Green energy open access for factories
