My DG diesel is on fuel invoices and DG units are in a log. Which do I count?

Count the diesel. Litres burnt x 2.68 kg CO2 per litre is your Scope 1 figure for the generator. Do not also multiply the DG units in your log by a grid factor; that counts the same emissions twice. Use the kWh log only for energy intensity and to cross-check the litres.

Why adding both is double counting

The DG units are the electricity made from that diesel. The emissions happened once, when the fuel burnt. The GHG Protocol counts fuel combusted in Scope 1 and does not add self-generated electricity again in Scope 2. Scope 2 is only for electricity you buy from someone else.

Get litres burnt, not litres bought

Use the kWh log as a check

Divide DG kWh by litres burnt. A healthy set at reasonable load gives roughly 3.0 to 3.5 kWh per litre, a labelled estimate; check the maker's curve for yours. A result far outside that range suggests missing invoices, diesel diverted elsewhere, or a faulty meter.

Energy figures for BRSR

Report the diesel's energy as fuel consumed. Do not add DG electricity to total energy as well, for the same reason. Some formats ask for self-generated electricity as a separate line for information; keep it out of the total.

Worked example: one year of DG records

2.68 kg CO2 per litre is the IPCC 2006 default for diesel.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads diesel quantities from fuel invoices and slips at 2.68 kg CO2 per litre for Scope 1, and discom electricity bills at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh for Scope 2, so DG power stays in Scope 1 through its fuel. Keep the DG log alongside as supporting evidence.
