How do I calculate the carbon footprint of electroplating per square metre or per part?

Add a month's rectifier, bath heating, extraction and pump energy, convert with 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh and the fuel factors, and divide by square metres plated. Then add the anode metal consumed per square metre times the metal's footprint. Multiply by a part's plated area to get the figure per part.

What goes in

Faraday's law as a check on the meter

The current needed per square metre follows from the metal deposited: Ah per m2 = grams per m2 x n x 26.8 / (molar mass x cathode efficiency), where n is the charge on the metal ion and 26.8 is the Faraday constant in Ah per mole. Multiply by the tank voltage and divide by the rectifier efficiency to get kWh.

If the metered kWh is far above this, the plant is losing energy to idle running, poor contacts or an old rectifier. Chromium baths work at low cathode efficiency, often under 25 percent, so they need several times more current per gram than nickel or zinc.

Per square metre or per part

Platers charge by area, rack or kg, but energy follows plated area and thickness. Record square metres from job cards using each part's plated surface area. For a part figure, multiply the per m2 figure by the part's area. If you plate very different thicknesses, allocate by ampere hours per job rather than by area alone.

Metal consumed, not metal on the part

Some metal leaves with drag-out, rinsing and sludge. Use anode purchases plus opening stock minus closing stock for the month, not the theoretical deposit. Recovering drag-out reduces both cost and the metal line of the footprint.

Worked example: a month on a bright nickel line (illustrative)

Inputs are illustrative, including the 95 percent cathode efficiency and 8 V tank voltage. Some of the nickel consumed leaves as drag-out, so the true deposit and the Faraday figure are a little lower. The metal line is CO2e from the supplier; the energy lines are CO2.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plating shop's electricity bills and LPG, PNG or diesel invoices and applies its published factors line by line. Square metres plated and anode stock come from your own job cards and stores records.
