How soon must an ESG rating be reviewed after a company publishes its BRSR or faces a controversy?

SEBI requires ESG rating providers to review a rating within 10 days of a material event, such as an environmental, social or governance controversy or penalty. After a company publishes its BRSR, the review must happen within 45 days, a relaxation SEBI made in January 2025.

What counts as a material event

A material development is any event that changes the ESG profile of the rated company. SEBI lists publication of the BRSR and controversies or penalties in environmental, social or governance areas as examples, without limiting it to those. Providers must have systems to track such developments.

The timelines

Why the BRSR timeline changed

Originally all reviews had a 10-day limit. Rating providers told SEBI it was hard to review a large pool of listed companies within 10 days of BRSR season, so on 17 January 2025 SEBI extended the limit for BRSR-triggered reviews to 45 days.

What companies can do

What Senseible does here

Senseible helps companies and suppliers keep energy and emissions figures reconciled to bills before BRSR filing. It has no role in ESG rating reviews.
