How do I calculate emissions from firewood bought by the quintal or tractor-load?

Convert quintals to kg (1 quintal = 100 kg), multiply by the wood's calorific value to get energy, then apply IPCC factors. The CO2 from wood is biogenic and reported separately; only the methane and nitrous oxide go into Scope 1. For a tractor-load, weigh it at a weighbridge rather than guess.

Getting from quintals or loads to kg

Energy from mass, and why moisture matters

The IPCC 2006 default net calorific value for wood is 15.6 MJ per kg. Fresh-cut firewood holds much more water than seasoned wood and gives less heat per kg, because part of the fire's energy goes into boiling that water off.

If you know the moisture on a wet basis, NCV of wet wood = NCV of dry wood x (1 minus moisture) minus 2.44 x moisture, in MJ per kg. For example, if a lab reports 19 MJ per kg on a dry basis and 20% moisture, the wood gives 19 x 0.8 minus 2.44 x 0.2 = 14.7 MJ per kg as burned. Without a test, use the IPCC default.

Which factors to apply

Records to keep

Keep the supplier bills in quintals, the weighbridge slips for loads, any moisture test and the factor table you used. If the wood comes from land being cleared rather than from waste or managed plantations, say so in your report: the biogenic treatment assumes the carbon is regrown.

Worked example: 50 quintals in a rice mill boiler

Uses the IPCC 2006 default NCV. Wetter wood would mean more kg for the same heat, so measured moisture gives a better figure.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads firewood bills for the quantity bought and keeps them, with your weighbridge slips, as the evidence behind this calculation.
