Can an FPO run its own carbon project instead of signing with a developer?
Yes, if it can do the proponent's job. Under Verra the FPO must hold the right to operate and the right to the reductions through contracts with its farmers, open a registry account, hire an accredited verifier, and fund documents, fees and monitoring until credits are issued and sold.
The rights an FPO must hold
- Verra's VCS Standard accepts, among other bases, a contractual right to the land, the equipment or the reductions, or an enforceable, irrevocable agreement with the people who hold the land rights.
- Where the project may affect land or resource rights, the proponent analyses those rights before the start date.
- Only the proponent, or an entity given the sole right to the reductions for the whole crediting period, can start registration.
What the FPO would run
- The project description under a chosen methodology, and monitoring of every field it lists.
- For projects starting on or after 1 July 2027: a stakeholder engagement plan and a grievance channel before the start date.
- A verifier accredited for the sector. The same verifier can do validation and the first verification; the next verification must use a different one, and a verifier generally may not verify more than six consecutive years of a project's results.
- Fees: the pipeline listing fee, and the issuance levy before credits are released.
Grouping farms
A grouped project lets one validated project add new farms later, so the FPO does not repeat validation for every member who joins.
A decision rule
Run it yourself if the FPO can carry the costs until the first sale and has staff to keep field records. If not, sign with a developer but keep data rights, payment dates and yearly revenue reporting in the contract.
What Senseible does here
An FPO can be the project owner on Senseible's field app, with agent invitations and verifier evidence pack exports set by agreement. Projects are created by the Senseible team.
