What is the carbon footprint of table grapes exported from Nashik to the EU per kg?

There is no single published figure; you build it from your own records. Add farm emissions per kg (fertiliser nitrous oxide, diesel, pump electricity), pack-house pre-cooling and cold store power, packaging, and reefer road and sea freight to the EU port. A worked example with stated assumptions comes to about 0.64 kg CO2e per kg.

Farm stage per kg

Export grade, domestic grade and rejects

One vineyard sells export fruit, domestic fruit and raisin grade. ISO 14067 asks you to avoid allocation where you can, then split by a physical measure, and use economic value only when that fails. Splitting farm emissions by mass gives every kg the same figure. Whatever you choose, state it, because it changes the export number.

Pack house and cold chain

Grapes are pre-cooled soon after harvest and held in cold stores before loading. Take the pack house's electricity for the season and divide by kg packed. Add DG diesel used during cuts, refrigerant top-ups converted to CO2e with a stated GWP, and packaging: cartons, liners, punnets and sulphur dioxide pads.

Freight to the EU port

Count the reefer truck from Nashik to Nhava Sheva and the reefer container voyage, in tonne-km on gross weight including packaging. Use the carrier's reefer factor if it gives one, or a GLEC Framework default, and name it. A voyage routed round the Cape of Good Hope instead of through Suez is much longer, so record the route.

Worked example: 1 kg of export grapes

Yield, kWh per kg, packaging, distances and both freight factors are illustrative. A farm in a wet climate would use 0.016, giving 1,373 kg CO2e of direct N2O and 0.231 kg CO2e per kg at the farm; the older 2006 single default of 0.01 gives 858 kg. Indirect N2O and fertiliser manufacture are not included; adding them raises the farm stage.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the pack house's electricity bills (billing period, tariff, sanctioned load, units) at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh and diesel invoices at 2.68 kg CO2 per litre, so the pack-house stage comes from dated bills. Its logistics calculator works out road and sea legs per tonne-km by mode, and a carrier's reefer factor can be used as given.
