What is the carbon footprint per kg of knitted fabric from a Tiruppur knitting and dyeing unit?

Add three parts per kg of finished fabric: the yarn's footprint, scaled up for knitting and dyeing losses; electricity for knitting, dyeing and the ZLD plant at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh; and the boiler fuel. With firewood, report its CO2 separately as biogenic and count only methane and nitrous oxide in Scope 1.

Collect figures from every unit that touched the fabric

In Tiruppur the work is often split: one unit knits, another dyes, a third compacts, and job workers fill gaps. Ask each for the same months' kWh, fuel bought and kg processed, or for its own per kg figure with the basis written down. A figure for your fabric is only as complete as the least complete unit in that chain.

Yarn is usually the biggest part, so get the loss right

You buy more yarn than the fabric you sell, because of knitting waste and weight lost in scouring and dyeing. Use your own records: kg of yarn issued divided by kg of finished fabric delivered for the same lots. Multiply the spinning mill's footprint per kg of yarn by that ratio, not by one.

Dyeing steam on firewood or other fuel

ZLD and the rest of the electricity

Dyeing units in Tiruppur run zero liquid discharge plants, as the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board requires. Their RO and evaporator power, and any steam the evaporators use, belong in the dyeing figure. Spread them over kg of fabric dyed in the same period. If the unit also dyes woven fabric or yarn, split by kg processed.

Say what the figure leaves out

The method above gives a cradle to gate figure for energy and yarn. Dyes, chemicals, packaging and transport are left out unless you add them from supplier data. Name the boundary, the period and the factors next to the number.

Illustrative month: knit and dye unit, 80,000 kg finished fabric

All quantities and the yarn footprint are illustrative. Replace them with your own bills, production register and the mill's figure.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the unit's electricity bills and fuel invoices and turns kWh, litres and kg into emissions with the factor shown on each line. The yarn footprint, the yield ratio and the kg of fabric produced are your inputs.
