How do I estimate the carbon footprint of silk fabric per kg, from cocoon to woven fabric?

Work backwards from 1 kg of fabric. Find how much raw silk it takes after degumming and weaving waste, how many kg of cocoons that raw silk took, then add farm, reeling, twisting, weaving and dyeing emissions at each step. Report firewood CO2 from reeling separately as biogenic, and label the result an estimate.

The chain of yields decides most of the answer

Silk loses weight at every step, so each stage's emissions get multiplied by the material it took to make one kg of fabric.

Renditta is the kg of cocoons reeled per kg of raw silk. It varies with cocoon quality and race, so take it from your reeler's records or the Central Silk Board figures for the season rather than a single national number.

Degumming removes sericin, the gum on the raw thread, and the fabric weighs noticeably less than the raw silk that went into it. Weigh a degummed batch and use your own loss figure.

What to count at each stage

Firewood in reeling basins

Many cottage reeling units burn firewood. The CO2 from wood is biogenic: report it as a separate line, not in the fossil total. The small methane and nitrous oxide from burning wood do count; IPCC 2006 Volume 2 gives default factors per TJ of wood. If reelers use LPG or coal instead, that CO2 is fossil and goes in the total.

How to present the number

Worked example: 1 kg of dyed silk fabric (illustrative)

Every yield, fertiliser rate and energy figure here is an assumption for illustration. Fertiliser manufacture, rearing-house electricity, firewood methane and nitrous oxide, and transport are left out. Replace each with your own records before sending a figure to a buyer.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your plant's electricity bills (0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CEA CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input you divide into a per-unit figure. Its reports are self-declared drafts; a product footprint for a buyer still needs your material data and your own sign-off.
