What surface temperature should a furnace or boiler wall run at?

BEE's MSME guidelines set average skin temperatures. A fuel-fired forging furnace should run at about 120 °C on the ceiling and 100 °C on side walls, with targets of 110 and 85. Electric and induction furnaces aim for 70 °C. Boilers and thermic fluid heaters target ambient plus 20 °C.

Standard and target skin temperatures

How to measure

Use an infrared thermometer on the walls and ceiling under steady operation and average the readings. BEE suggests quarterly checks for most furnaces and monthly for induction forging furnaces.

What a hot wall tells you

A wall above target is losing heat that you paid for in fuel. BEE's fixes are thicker insulation, lower conductivity insulating material, veneering on inside surfaces where it suits, and fewer and better sealed openings.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel invoices into monthly totals, so fuel per tonne before and after an insulation job sits in one record.
