How does a steel wire drawing unit in Gebze or Kocaeli work out its CBAM figure?
Steel wire under CN 7217 is a CBAM good. Add the wire rod's embedded emissions, in proportion to the tonnes consumed including losses, to your own direct emissions from annealing, galvanising and any fuel fired furnaces, then divide by tonnes of wire. Drawing machines run on electricity, which is not charged.
The figure
- Tonnes of wire rod consumed in the period.
- Times the rod mill's embedded emissions per tonne, or the default value.
- Plus gas or LPG burnt in annealing and zinc baths.
- Divided by tonnes of wire produced.
Losses
Scale, crop ends and rejects mean more rod goes in than wire comes out. Use the actual consumption, not the shipped weight, so the precursor share is right.
Coatings
Zinc is not a CBAM good, but the fuel used to heat the zinc bath counts in your direct emissions.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads coal, coke, gas and electricity invoices and production records into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so the direct emissions behind each tonne can be traced to the documents. Emissions factors outside India are entered from the official source and labelled.
