How do I calculate the carbon footprint of handloom fabric per metre?

Work out the yarn per metre from GSM and width, add weaving waste, and multiply by the yarn's footprint from the spinner or a published dataset. Add dyeing and sizing fuel and electricity per metre. The hand loom itself uses no power, so yarn and dyeing make up almost all of the figure.

Fabric weight per metre

Grams per metre = GSM x width in metres. A 120 GSM fabric that is 1.1 m wide weighs 132 g per metre. Add the yarn lost in warping, sizing and weaving, from your own yarn issue and fabric output records, to get yarn used per metre.

Where the emissions come from

Firewood in dyeing

Many dyers heat vats with firewood. That CO2 is biogenic and is reported separately; methane and nitrous oxide from burning stay in the total. If a cluster dye house serves many weavers, ask for its fuel per kilogram of yarn dyed and apply it to your yarn.

Telling the story honestly

Handloom fabric avoids loom electricity entirely, which is a real difference from power looms. It does not make yarn or dyeing emissions disappear. Show the loom energy as zero and the yarn and dyeing parts clearly, rather than claiming the fabric is carbon free.

Worked example: dyeing energy per metre

Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the electricity and LPG bills of the dye house or cooperative (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, IPCC 2006 fuel defaults) into a fingerprinted record. Yarn bought goes to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
