How many brick kilns does Haryana have, what do they burn, and how much energy does a brick take?
Haryana has about 2,800 kilns, concentrated in Jhajjar, Sonepat, Faridabad and Ambala, making around 14 billion bricks a year on about 1.12 million tonnes of oil equivalent. Firing is mostly Bull's Trench Kilns on coal and biomass. That is roughly 80 g of oil equivalent a brick.
The sector in numbers
- About 2,800 kilns in Jhajjar, Sonepat, Faridabad and Ambala.
- Around 14 billion bricks a year.
- Total energy about 1.12 million tonnes of oil equivalent a year.
- Largely manual production, though a few units use extruders.
- Bull's Trench Kilns dominate, with limited use of zig-zag firing.
- Mainly solid bricks, with some perforated and hollow resource-efficient bricks.
- Coal and biomass are the main fuels.
Who speaks for the sector
The Haryana Brick Kiln Owners Association and the All India Brick and Tile Manufacturers Federation.
What to do with the numbers
Use the per-brick figure only as a yardstick. Your own bills decide your footprint, and a kiln on coal and one on biomass will differ.
Energy per brick, from the sector totals (estimate)
- 1.12 million toe is 1.12 billion kg of oil equivalent.
- 1.12 billion divided by 14 billion bricks = 0.08 kg, or 80 g, per brick.
- Punjab works out at about 79 g on the same sums, so the two states are close.
Rounded totals from SIDBI's assessment of the brick sector, so treat the per-brick figure as an estimate.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads coal, biomass, diesel and power bills into verified emission records for a kiln, so you can state a footprint per thousand bricks from your own documents. Verified here means rule checks passed against the evidence, not third-party assurance.
