Senseible

How can I recheck the arithmetic in a GHG report myself?

Take each large line, multiply the activity quantity by the stated emission factor, convert kg to tonnes, and compare with the report. Then add the lines and compare with the scope totals. Check the units first: the usual errors are kg read as tonnes or a factor meant for a different unit.

The one formula

Emissions = activity data x emission factor. This is the basic method in the IPCC 2006 Guidelines and in the GHG Protocol. If a line uses anything more complex, such as fuel heating values, the report should show the steps.

Steps that catch most errors

  1. Pick the lines that make up about 80% of the total. Usually that is grid electricity, the main fuel and the largest purchased material.
  2. Check the units match: litres with kg per litre, kWh with kg per kWh, kg of LPG with kg per kg. A factor per tonne applied to kg gives a figure 1,000 times too large.
  3. Recompute each line and divide by 1,000 to get tonnes.
  4. Add the lines within each scope and compare with the stated scope totals.
  5. Add the scopes and compare with the grand total. A mismatch here often means a scope was double counted or one was dropped.

Check the factors themselves

What counts as a match

Small differences from rounding are normal. A gap of more than about one per cent on a large line deserves a question; a gap that is a round multiple, such as 10 or 1,000 times, is almost always a unit error.

Worked example: rechecking three lines

What Senseible does here

Senseible recomputes each line from its quantity and factor and flags any mismatch beyond max(0.01, 0.1%) as part of its rule checks, and shows the quantity, factor and source so a reader can redo the sum.
