If my city gas supplier blends hydrogen into PNG, how does my Scope 1 change?
Burning hydrogen emits no CO2, so a blend lowers Scope 1, but by less than the blend percentage suggests. Hydrogen carries about a third of methane's energy per cubic metre, so a few percent by volume replaces a smaller share of energy. Ask the supplier for blend share and calorific value.
How to calculate
- Get the hydrogen share and calorific value from the supplier for the period.
- Apply the natural gas factor only to the natural gas part.
- Count the hydrogen's production emissions in Scope 3, Category 3, if the supplier gives them.
Check the bill
Bills in energy units (MMBtu or kcal) handle the lower energy per volume; bills in scm need the calorific value.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel invoices and electricity bills and applies IPCC 2006 factors and the CEA grid factor (0.710 kg CO2 per kWh), so you can compare Scope 1 and 2 before and after a change from the documents themselves.
