Indore foundries run mostly on electricity: what does that mean for their carbon figure?

Electricity was 87% of the energy Indore's 45 or so foundries used, 56 million kWh in 2007-08. On today's grid factor that power carries about 94% of the cluster's fossil CO2, so a foundry here cuts carbon mainly through kWh per tonne and the source of its power.

The cluster in numbers

Why the grid sets your figure

Induction furnaces in the cluster use 560 to 750 kWh per tonne, about 700 on average. At 0.675 kg CO2 per kWh, 700 kWh is about 0.47 t CO2 per tonne at the melt alone. A cupola at 2.0 to 5.4 GJ of coke per tonne gives about 0.21 to 0.58 t. So moving from cupola to induction does not by itself cut CO2 on the Indian grid; cutting kWh per tonne, or buying renewable power, does.

Where the kWh go

Cluster CO2 on today's factors (estimate)

Uses the cluster brief's 2007-08 quantities with current factors; firewood at IPCC defaults. A unit's own bills replace these.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads each electricity bill's units and period and your melt records, so kWh per tonne of good castings comes from your own documents every month.
