How much energy per tonne do Jalandhar hand tool makers use, and what does it mean for EU buyers?

Making a tonne of hand tools in Jalandhar takes about 0.399 toe, roughly 2.2 t CO2 at today's factors (estimate), most of it from grid power and before the steel itself. That is TERI's average across 950 units making about 50,000 t of tools a year.

Where the energy goes

Your unit against the cluster

What it means for an EU buyer

Hand tools sit in Chapter 82, outside CBAM, so your buyer pays no border charge on them. What they ask for instead is a figure per tool for their own supply chain reporting. The making stage comes from your bills. The steel bar comes from your steel supplier and can weigh as much as your own making stage or more, so ask the mill or stockist for its figure per tonne.

Where the carbon actually sits

Power is half the energy but about 70% of the CO2, because grid electricity carries more carbon per unit of energy than oil. That makes efficient motors and rooftop solar count for more here than they would in an oil-heavy forge. Many motors in the cluster have been rewound several times, losing 3 to 5% efficiency each time.

Estimate: the cluster's making-stage CO2 per tonne

Cluster totals from TERI's 2010-11 visits, Senseible's furnace oil factor applied to all oil, and the FY 2025-26 grid factor. Wood is left out as biogenic. Your bills and despatch register give your figure.

What Senseible does here

Upload your PSPCL bills and oil invoices and Senseible turns them into a dated Scope 1 and 2 record; add tonnes despatched and you have a per-tonne making-stage figure to send your buyer alongside the steel supplier's number.
