Jetpur's dyeing and printing units get 84% of their energy from heat: what does the cluster burn?

Mostly biomass briquettes and lignite. TERI's 2015 profile puts Jetpur's 1,120 dyeing and printing units at 101,387 toe a year: 140,880 t of briquettes, 90,000 t of lignite, 6,420 t of wood and 111.7 million kWh. Lignite and grid power are the fossil CO2; briquettes and wood are biogenic.

Turning the fuel into CO2

Lignite counts in full in Scope 1. Without your own lab report, the IPCC default works out to about 1.20 t CO2 per tonne; with a report, use its carbon content. Briquettes and wood are biogenic: report their CO2 separately, outside Scope 1. Grid power is Scope 2. So two process houses with the same output can show very different fossil figures depending on their lignite to briquette mix.

Worked example: TERI's typical process house

Lignite at the IPCC 2006 default (11.9 GJ per t x 101 kg CO2 per GJ); power at Senseible's FY 2025-26 grid factor. TERI's figures are from 2015.

What Senseible does here

Each month's power bills and fuel slips become records in Senseible, and the unit gets its carbon number. It does not guess a lignite factor: lignite lines are flagged rather than given a made-up number, while power is counted straight away and briquettes are treated as biogenic.
