How do I calculate the carbon footprint of Kota stone per square metre?
Kota stone is quarried and cut, not made, so the footprint is mainly energy: diesel for quarrying and loading, then electricity for cutting and polishing. Divide each by square metres dispatched and add transport to site.
Quarrying
- Diesel for excavators, loaders and compressors.
- Explosives if used.
- Waste rock handled per square metre.
Processing
- Cutting machines and edge cutters.
- Polishing, if the stone is sold polished.
- Packing and loading.
Per square metre
Report per square metre by thickness and finish. Transport to the buyer can be a large share for distant sites.
Worked example: kota stone unit per sq m (one month)
- Diesel: 6,000 litres x 2.68 = 16,080 kg CO2
- Electricity: 15,000 kWh x 0.710 = 10,650 kg CO2
- Square metres dispatched: 50,000
- Plant total: 26,730 / 50,000 = 0.535 kg CO2 per sq m
- Add transport to site for the full figure
Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
