Senseible

We lease electric cars and vans from a fleet provider. Are their emissions Scope 1, 2 or 3?

Never Scope 1, since EVs burn no fuel. Under operational control, the charging electricity of leased EVs you drive is Scope 2. Under financial control or equity share, an operating lease puts it in Scope 3 Category 8 and a finance lease in Scope 2. A vehicle with a provider's driver is a transport service instead.

Decision table for leased EVs

Where the kWh comes from

What the provider reports

The leasing company reports the same charging in its Category 13, downstream leased assets, when you hold control. Your Scope 2 and its Category 13 describe the same kWh from two sides, which is how the GHG Protocol intends it.

Write the choice down

Name the consolidation approach, the lease type from your agreement, the kWh source and the grid factor. Apply the same rule to leased diesel vehicles, whose fuel goes in Scope 1 under the same conditions.

Worked example: five leased e-vans charged at the depot

Grid factor: CEA CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills (billing period, tariff category, sanctioned load, units) and applies the CEA grid factor of 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0, for location-based Scope 2.
