How many SCM of gas are in a tonne of LNG?
PPAC, citing GAIL, gives 1 tonne of LNG = 1,314 SCM of gas, based on a molecular weight of 18. One million tonnes a year of LNG equals 3.60 million SCM a day. Use it to compare LNG invoices in tonnes with pipeline gas billed in SCM.
The reference values
- 1 tonne of LNG = 1,314 SCM.
- 1 MMTPA of LNG = 3.60 MMSCMD at 365 days a year.
- 1 BCM a year = 2.74 MMSCMD.
- 1 cubic metre = 35.31 cubic feet.
For emissions, prefer the invoice energy
LNG cargoes vary in composition, so the energy per tonne varies too. If the invoice states MMBtu or GJ, use that with the IPCC natural gas factor. The 1,314 figure is for volume planning and cross-checks.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads the quantity and unit printed on each fuel invoice, converts it with a stated density or calorific value, and shows the factor and source on every line, so a litre or kilogram is never guessed.
