What grid emission factor should a supplier in Oman use for electricity?
Oman generates almost all its grid power from natural gas, so the location based factor sits around half a kilogram of CO2 per kWh. Use the official national or IEA figure for the reporting year, state its source and year, and report solar or certificate purchases separately under the market based method.
Location based
Take the national average factor for the year of the bills. Gas fired combined cycle plants pull it down, older open cycle units push it up, so the figure moves a little from year to year.
Market based
If you buy electricity from a named solar plant under contract, or hold certificates that meet the Scope 2 quality criteria, that figure goes in the market based total. Without them, the market based figure falls back to the grid average.
What to send
- kWh per month from the bills.
- The factor, its source and its year.
- Both totals, labelled.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads electricity bills into dated, fingerprinted records and keeps location based and market based figures side by side, each with the factor and year used.
