Which grid emission factor should a Saudi supplier use?
Use the national grid factor published by the Saudi authorities for the year the power was used, and cite it. The grid runs mainly on gas and oil, so recent figures are around half a kilogram of CO2 per kWh or a little more. If you buy power from a dedicated plant, use that plant's own rate.
Which number for which question
- Location based Scope 2: the official national factor for the year.
- Market based Scope 2: certificates or a supply contract from a solar or wind plant meeting the Scope 2 Quality Criteria.
- Cogeneration in the industrial city: the supplying plant's own rate for power and steam.
Keep it auditable
Record the publication or the supplier statement, its year and the value, and keep the same source year to year.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads each site's monthly electricity bills into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 2 record. Grid factors outside India are entered from the official source for the country and year, and are labelled with that source.
