What counts in the CBAM figure for primary aluminium from a Pavlodar smelter?
Only direct emissions: CO2 from anode consumption and perfluorocarbons from anode effects, plus fuel used in casting and anode baking inside the installation. Power from Ekibastuz coal plants is indirect and not charged for aluminium, even though it is the largest part of the metal's footprint.
What to measure
- Net anode consumption per tonne of aluminium and its carbon content.
- Anode effect frequency and duration, converted to CF4 and C2F6 with AR6 warming potentials.
- Gas or oil used in casthouse furnaces and any anode baking on site.
What stays out of CBAM
Electricity for electrolysis, alumina and transport. Buyers counting Scope 3 will still ask for the electricity figure, so keep it beside the CBAM number.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads anode, fuel and electricity invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so a buyer can see which inputs sit behind each figure. Factors outside India are entered from the official source and labelled.
