What goes into the CBAM figure for ferrochrome from an Aktobe or Aksu smelter?
Direct emissions from the carbon in coke, coal and electrodes, plus any fuel burnt for pre-heating or drying, worked out by mass balance and divided by tonnes of alloy. Power from Kazakhstan's coal plants is indirect and not charged for ferro-alloys, though steel buyers will ask for it separately.
Inputs to balance
- Coke and coal used as reductant in the electric furnaces.
- Electrode paste.
- Fuel for chrome ore pellet sintering or pre-heating kilns, if inside the installation.
- Carbon leaving in alloy, slag and dust.
CN codes
High carbon ferrochrome is declared under 7202 41 and other ferrochrome under 7202 49. Both are iron and steel goods, charged on direct emissions.
What a stainless mill will add
Electricity per tonne, because the coal heavy grid makes it the largest share of the product footprint even though CBAM leaves it out.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads coal, coke, gas and electricity invoices and production records into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so the direct emissions behind each tonne can be traced to the documents. Emissions factors outside India are entered from the official source and labelled.
