How much petcoke is lost in open storage at a lime kiln, and what does covered storage save?

About 1% of the pet coke you buy, in BEE's Jodhpur report. Open heaps lose 2 to 3%; hard floors and brick or concrete bays save roughly 22 t a year, Rs 1.5 lakh at Rs 7,000 a tonne, for a unit making 12,000 t of quicklime. Cost Rs 2.4 lakh, payback 1.6 years (2011 prices).

Where the coke goes

What the report proposes

  1. A hard, sealed floor under the stock so fines cannot sink into the soil.
  2. Storage bays built from brick and concrete, so the heap has walls and a roof against wind and rain.
  3. Less handling: every extra shift of the heap makes more fines.
  4. Cost: Rs 2.0 lakh material, Rs 0.2 lakh erection, Rs 0.2 lakh other, Rs 2.4 lakh in all. The report's cover table shows Rs 2.0 lakh, but its own cost table and payback use Rs 2.4 lakh.

The carbon point most units miss

Better storage does not change what the kiln burns, so kiln CO2 per tonne of lime stays the same. What changes is the number on your purchase bills. If you work out Scope 1 from coke bought, a 2.5% yard loss adds about 55 t of coke, roughly 174 t CO2, that never reached the kiln. Count the coke fed to the kiln: purchases, less the change in stock, less losses you can show.

A 12,000 t a year quicklime unit

Pet coke at the IPCC 2006 default of about 3.17 t CO2 a tonne (32.5 GJ a tonne x 97.5 kg CO2 a GJ), an estimate. Use your lab's calorific value and carbon content if you have them.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads pet coke invoices and electricity bills into monthly records, with CO2 for the power. It has no pet coke factor, so apply the one above to the tonnes fed to the kiln, and keep a stock register so purchases and burn can be told apart.
