Can many small MSMEs pool energy-efficiency projects into one carbon credit programme?

Yes. Registries allow it through grouped projects (Verra's VCS) or programmes of activities (the CDM and Gold Standard), where one coordinator registers the programme and brings in further sites under the same rules. Every site keeps its own baseline, monitoring and a contract that hands its credit rights to the coordinator.

Two ways to pool

In both, the methodology, baseline approach and monitoring plan are fixed once, which spreads the fixed costs over many units.

What each MSME must provide

Size limits and methods

CDM small-scale methods such as AMS-II.C and AMS-II.D cover energy efficiency activities that save up to the equivalent of 60 GWh a year each, which suits MSME sites. Credit methods use the CEA combined margin for grid electricity savings, not the weighted average used for Scope 2 reporting.

Double counting risks to settle first

Under India's CCTS offset mechanism

The offset mechanism lets non-obligated entities register projects under BEE-approved methodologies. Check BEE's current procedures for whether and how sites can be grouped before you design the programme.

Worked example: why pooling matters (illustrative)

0.710 kg CO2 per kWh is the CEA weighted average, used here only for scale. Credit calculations use the methodology's own baseline factor, usually the combined margin.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads each unit's electricity bills and fuel invoices, keeps them as dated evidence for the baseline and monitoring periods, and shows carbon credit eligibility signals. It is not a registry and does not issue credits.
