How much electricity do Porbandar's block ice plants use?

About 77 kWh per tonne of ice, on SAMEEEKSHA's cluster figures. Porbandar's 40 units, mostly small and micro, make 330,800 t of ice a year, mostly block ice for fishing boats, on 2,184 toe of electricity alone: roughly 25.4 million kWh and 17,100 t of CO2 at FY 2025-26's grid factor (estimate).

The cluster

How 77 kWh compares

Bhimavaram's block ice plants in Andhra Pradesh average 102 kWh per tonne, with plants observed from 87 to 120. Porbandar's cluster average comes out lower. Treat it as a cluster figure worked out from two totals, not a measured plant result: your own meter and block count decide where you stand.

Get your own figure in a month

  1. Read the main meter at the start and end of the month, or take kWh from the bill.
  2. Count blocks pulled from the cans and multiply by the block weight.
  3. Divide kWh by tonnes. Repeat in peak summer, when the same ice takes more power.
  4. Add generator diesel if you run one during cuts, and any refrigerant top up from the service invoice.

Why the fish exporter may ask

Ice bought by a seafood processor is part of its supply chain. An exporter answering an EU or US buyer may ask you for kWh per tonne and the month's tonnes. A clean monthly log answers that in one line.

Cluster and one plant at FY 2025-26 factors (estimate)

Units, output and energy from SAMEEEKSHA's Porbandar ice making cluster summary; the per tonne figure is our division of its two totals. Bhimavaram figures from BEE's study of that cluster. CO2 at the CEA FY 2025-26 grid factor.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your electricity bills into monthly kWh and CO2; divide by your tonnes of ice for the per tonne figure a buyer asks for.
