How do I calculate the carbon footprint per kg of a powder metallurgy sintered part?

Add three lines per kg of good sintered parts: iron powder issued times the powder maker's footprint, compacting and sintering electricity times the grid factor, and the LPG or natural gas cracked for the furnace atmosphere times its fuel factor. Then add sizing, steam treatment or machining if your route has them.

Powder: issued, not bought

Take powder issued to the presses in a month, including any copper, graphite and lubricant premix, and divide by kg of good parts out of the furnace and inspection. Sintering is near net shape, so the ratio is close to one, but green breakage, setting losses and rejects still belong in it.

Premix powders are blends. Ask the supplier for a figure for the exact grade, or build it from the share of iron, copper and graphite with a factor for each, and label any database figure as a proxy.

Furnace electricity, allocated by weight

Most mesh belt and pusher furnaces are electrically heated, and they draw power whether the belt is full or half empty. Use a sub-meter on the furnace if you have one; otherwise share the plant's monthly kWh by machine hours. Divide furnace kWh by kg sintered in the same month, so a lightly loaded month shows its true cost per kg.

Compacting presses, sizing presses, the furnace cooling water and the compressor are separate electricity lines. Put each in kWh per kg, then multiply the total by 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh for location-based Scope 2.

The protective atmosphere

What to send the OEM

Give kg CO2e per part and per kg, cradle to gate, with the powder grade and its source, the powder per kg ratio, the electricity per kg and the grid factor edition, and the atmosphere gas per kg. Keep powder separate from your own plant energy, since the OEM may hold better powder data than you.

Worked example: one month, per kg of good sintered parts

The powder factor, kWh per kg and LPG per kg are illustrative. Use your supplier's figure and your own meter and gas records for the same month.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads powder, LPG, PNG and electricity invoices, applying 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh and the IPCC 2006 factors for LPG and PNG, and keeps powder purchases in the Scope 3 evidence trail. Product reports are self-declared drafts built from your output figures.
