How do I count emissions from purified water and WFI generation in a formulation plant?

Count the energy each step uses. For a multi-column still, multiply steam per litre of WFI by litres made and by the CO2 per kg of your boiler's steam. For membrane systems, multiply kWh per litre by litres and by 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh. Then add hot loop heating and cooling.

Map the water system first

The calculation for each route

  1. Steam route: litres of WFI x steam per litre (still data sheet or a steam flow meter) x kg CO2 per kg of steam from your boiler records.
  2. Electric route: litres x kWh per litre (sub-meter preferred) x 0.710.
  3. Loop: steam or heater energy for the loop over the period, converted the same way.
  4. Point of use cooling: the chiller's kWh share x 0.710.

Allocating it to products

The water system's emissions already sit inside the plant's Scope 1 and 2. For a product footprint, allocate them by litres of WFI drawn by each block or product, from point of use meters or batch records. In a plant making both tablets and injectables, the injectables can draw most of the WFI, so sharing by units or floor area misstates both.

Where savings come from

Illustrative example: 10,000 litres of WFI a day

Steam per litre, CO2 per tonne of steam and PW kWh are illustrative. Take CO2 per tonne of steam from your own fuel and steam records.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads boiler fuel invoices and electricity bills into the plant's Scope 1 and 2. Splitting those totals to the water system needs sub-meter readings or a labelled estimate from your utility logs.
