How do I calculate the carbon footprint per 1,000 tablets for a formulation plant?

Add the plant's electricity, DG diesel and boiler fuel emissions for a period, share them across products, and divide by thousands of tablets made. A plant using 4 million kWh a year for 2 billion tablets has 2 kWh per 1,000 tablets, which is 1.42 kg CO2 from grid power, before the API.

Energy emissions for the plant

Sharing energy in a multi-product plant

Clean room air handling runs all day whatever is on the line, so a plain split by tablet count can mislead. Where blocks are metered, give each block's energy to the products it made. Otherwise share by machine hours on compression, coating and packing, and spread common HVAC by floor area or by hours each product occupied the suite.

ISO 14067 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard both prefer a physical basis such as hours or mass over rupees. State the basis you chose.

What else goes into a cradle to gate figure

Reporting it to a buyer

Give the figure per 1,000 tablets for each strength, with the year, the grid factor and its source, the allocation basis and what is excluded. NHS and EU buyers often compare suppliers on a like for like basis, so keep the same boundary across products.

Worked example: plant energy for one year

A single product plant is assumed; share by machine hours or metered blocks if several products run.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads plant power bills, DG diesel and boiler fuel invoices into Scope 1 and 2 with the factor on each line. API, excipient and packaging purchases go to the supplier evidence trail, where a supplier's footprint can be kept with the invoice.
