A Raigarh steel plant runs its own coal mine: which scope do the mine's emissions go in?
If your company owns or controls the mine, its diesel, explosives, electricity and mine methane are your own Scope 1 and 2, not Scope 3. Report the mine as a separate site so the plant figure and the mine figure can each be checked against their own records.
Owned or controlled
Under the GHG Protocol, emissions follow control. A captive block you operate is inside your boundary. Coal bought from a mine you do not operate is Scope 3, category 1.
What the mine adds
- Diesel for haul trucks and shovels.
- Explosives used in blasting.
- Grid or captive power for crushers and conveyors.
- Methane released from the seam.
Buyers and CBAM
CBAM counts the steel plant's direct emissions and precursors, not mining. Your own inventory and lender reports should still include the mine, or they look smaller than they are.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel, electricity and freight invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so each figure you send a buyer traces back to the documents behind it.
