What is the carbon footprint of the Ramnagar plastics cluster?
About 20,000 tonnes of CO2 a year at today's factors. TERI's 2016 profile of the Ramnagar (Chandauli) plastic cluster puts its roughly 52 units at 2,860 toe a year: 27.8 million kWh of grid power, 452 kilolitres of diesel for DG sets and 36 tonnes of LPG. Pipe and fitting units use over 60% of it.
The cluster
- About 52 plastic units employing about 600 people.
- 22 sack and bag units, 20 pipe and component units, 10 masterbatch units.
- Electricity from PUVVNL is about 84% of energy; diesel runs DG sets through frequent power cuts.
Energy by segment
- Pipes and fittings: 1,755 toe.
- Sacks and bags: 450 toe.
- Household items: 220 toe.
- Others: 435 toe.
Where savings are
- Radiant barrel heater bands: 20 to 30%.
- VFD on extruder motors: up to 20%.
- VSD on bobbin winders in place of eddy current drives: 50 to 60%.
- Servo motors on injection moulding hydraulics: about 30%.
Cluster CO2 at current factors
- Electricity: 27,800,000 kWh x 0.675 kg = 18,765 tCO2.
- Diesel: 452,000 litres x 2.645 kg = 1,196 tCO2.
- LPG: 36 t x 2.985 tCO2 per tonne (IPCC: 63.1 tCO2/TJ x 47.3 TJ/Gg) = 107 tCO2.
- Total: about 20,068 tCO2 a year; electricity is 94% of it.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads PUVVNL bills and diesel invoices into monthly kWh, litres and CO2 per unit, so one unit can compare itself with the cluster.
