How much solar or wind capacity is needed per tonne of green hydrogen a year?

Roughly 30 kW of solar or 20 kW of wind for each tonne of green hydrogen a year, before storage and curtailment. That assumes 52 kWh per kg for the electrolyser system and capacity factors of 20 percent for solar and 30 percent for wind. Capacity rises in step with consumption, so use your own figures.

The formula

  1. Electricity needed (MWh a year) = hydrogen (tonnes a year) x system consumption (MWh per tonne).
  2. Energy from 1 MW of capacity (MWh a year) = 8,760 hours x capacity utilisation factor (CUF).
  3. Capacity needed (MW) = electricity needed / energy per MW.
  4. Add a margin for curtailment, transmission losses, module and stack degradation, and any storage losses.

Choosing the inputs

Electrolyser size is a separate question

Generation sets the energy; the electrolyser must also absorb the power when it comes. With solar alone the electrolyser runs only in daylight, so it has to be close to the solar plant's peak output, about 30 MW in the example below. Running round the clock, the same 52 GWh needs only about 6 MW of electrolyser, but then you need wind, storage, open access banking or grid power to fill the night hours.

Grid top-up and the 2 kg threshold

India's Green Hydrogen Standard allows at most 2 kg CO2e per kg of hydrogen, well to gate, averaged over 12 months. At 52 kWh per kg, pure grid power at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh gives about 36.9 kg CO2 per kg of hydrogen. Even with every other source at zero, grid power could supply only about 5 percent of the electricity before the threshold is breached.

Worked example: 1,000 tonnes of hydrogen a year

All inputs are labelled assumptions. Real projects add 10 to 20 percent or more for curtailment and losses; treat that margin as a planning estimate.

What Senseible does here

Capacity sizing is an engineering calculation outside Senseible's document reader. Senseible reads electricity bills and fuel invoices, so a plant's grid and fuel use can sit in the same invoice-backed record it keeps for Scope 1 and 2.
