What makes an SBTi target show as "Expired"?
Under SBTi Commitment and Target Statuses V2.1, a target shows Expired when a year passes after its target year with no new target submitted, when a five-year review deadline is missed, or when 12 months pass after the review trigger date with no form or submission. It applies only to that target.
The four routes to Expired
- At least one year has passed since the target year and no new target was submitted.
- The deadline set by the five-year review outcome passed without a new submission.
- Twelve months passed after the review trigger date and neither the review form nor a new submission arrived.
- A target already in one of these cases was resubmitted and failed validation.
Only that target expires
If a company has a 2025 renewable electricity target and a 2030 Scope 1 target, only the 2025 one expires. A target with an interim year and a final year does not expire at the interim year while the final year is still ahead. The other targets keep the status Other, which usually means an approved target within its timeframe.
What it means for the company
The company decides whether the rest of its targets still meet the criteria without the expired one. If a Scope 3 supplier engagement target expires, its remaining Scope 3 targets may fall short of the required coverage.
If your customer's target expired
Expect a new target soon, possibly under the Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0, where customers can count suppliers that are in transition or net-zero aligned. That usually means a fresh request for your emissions and your own target plans.
Example: a buyer's supplier target
- Target: 70% of suppliers by emissions will have science-based targets by 2025
- Target year ends 31 December 2025
- No new target submitted by the end of 2026: this target shows Expired
- The buyer's 2030 Scope 1 and 2 target still shows Other
Example company.
What Senseible does here
Senseible gives suppliers their Scope 1 and 2 from their own bills and keeps Scope 3 supplier evidence, which is what a buyer resetting its targets asks for. It does not set, submit or validate SBTi targets; SBTi Services validates them.

- What SBTi "Commitment removed" means
- Supplier engagement targets
- Scope 3 supplier evidence
