How do I calculate the emissions of a solvent recovery distillation plant?

Take the steam the recovery columns use, from the steam meter, and give them that share of the boiler fuel. Add the electricity for pumps and condensers at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, then divide by kilograms of solvent recovered. Report boiler fuel as Scope 1 and grid power as Scope 2.

What uses energy

How to allocate the boiler

Use steam meter readings, or the column design steam rate times operating hours if there is no meter, and label the second as an estimate. The share of boiler fuel follows the share of steam.

Recovered versus virgin solvent

Recovered solvent replaces purchased solvent. Report the recovery energy in your inventory; do not subtract the virgin solvent you avoided buying, and keep any such comparison as a separate, labelled estimate.

Worked example: one month of solvent recovery (illustrative inputs)

Fuel, steam and output are illustrative; use your boiler log, steam meter and recovery register.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 records. A per-unit figure divides those by the output you enter, and purchased materials are added from supplier data on the Scope 3 trail, labelled by source.
