What is a State Designated Agency for energy conservation, and when should my factory contact it?

A State Designated Agency is the body your state government names under Section 15 of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 to coordinate, regulate and enforce the Act in the state. Contact it if you are a designated consumer, if your building must meet the state energy code, or if you want a state energy efficiency programme.

Who it is in your state

Each state picks its own agency. Often it is the state renewable energy development agency, an energy management centre or the electrical inspectorate. BEE's list names, for example, MEDA in Maharashtra, KREDL in Karnataka and the Energy Management Centre in Kerala. Check the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) website for the current list and contacts.

What it does

When your factory should contact it

  1. You are a designated consumer, or your energy use is close to your sector's threshold.
  2. You are building or extending a commercial building that may fall under the state's energy code.
  3. You plan an energy audit or efficiency project and want to know whether a state programme supports it. Get the terms in writing before you buy equipment.
  4. You want to apply for a state energy conservation award.

What it is not

It is not your discom, and it is not usually where MSME capital subsidies sit; those come from the state industries department.

What Senseible does here

Senseible turns fuel invoices and electricity bills into a dated record of each energy source, which is the first thing an energy audit, scheme form or energy report asks for. Filings with the agency are made by you.
