How do I add a tea estate's fertiliser emissions to the footprint per kg of made tea?

Work out the season's field emissions from fertiliser, divide by the kg of made tea produced from the estate's own leaf, and add the result to the factory figure per kg. Field emissions are direct and indirect N2O from the nitrogen applied plus CO2 from urea, using IPCC defaults.

Field emissions from the application register

Divide by the right tea

Divide only by made tea from the estate's own leaf. If the factory also buys green leaf from small growers, their fertiliser belongs to that bought leaf, from supplier data or a labelled estimate. Split production using the factory's records of estate leaf received and the out-turn of made tea.

Joining it to the factory figure

Footprint per kg made tea = factory energy per kg + estate field emissions per kg of own made tea, weighted by the share made from estate leaf. Add the making of the fertiliser as its own upstream line: tonnes bought x a cradle to gate factor for urea or NPK.

Common errors

Worked example: 500 ha estate on urea

IPCC 2006 Tier 1 defaults with AR6 GWP; dose and yield are illustrative. With the 2019 Refinement wet climate EF1 of 0.016, direct N2O rises to 947 kg CO2e per ha.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fertiliser purchase invoices with their quantities, and the factory's fuel and electricity bills into Scope 1 and 2. The application register and the field calculation come from the estate's own records.
