How does a Tiruppur knitwear unit work out carbon per garment?
Add the unit's electricity and fuel emissions for the month and divide by pieces packed. That gives the making-stage figure per garment. Fabric, yarn and dyeing bought in sit in Scope 3 and should be added from supplier figures, not guessed.
Steps
Electricity kWh x 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh.
Diesel for generators in litres x 2.68 kg CO2 per litre.
Add, then divide by pieces packed in the month.
Different garments
If products differ a lot, split by standard minutes per piece instead of piece count, and state the basis.
Worked example: one month (illustrative inputs)
- Electricity: 25,000 kWh x 0.710 = 17,750 kg CO2
- Generator diesel: 840 L x 2.68 = 2,251.2 kg CO2
- Total: 17,750 + 2,251.2 = 20,001.2 kg CO2
- Pieces packed: 100,000, so 20,001.2 / 100,000 = 0.200 kg CO2 per piece
Quantities are illustrative; use your bills and packing register.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
