Can I retire only some of my Verra credits now and the rest later?
Yes. Verra allows incremental retirement: you pick the specific set of Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) in your registry account to retire now and ask for the rest later. Verra may set limits on the number of instalments and the time between the first and the last.
What the process says (section 4.6)
- Only the registry account holder starts a retirement; the account holder or its authorised representative executes it in the Verra Registry. Verra records the details.
- Retirement can be incremental: you may retire part of your holdings and any or all of the rest at a later date (4.6.5).
- You designate the specific set of VCUs to retire each time, through your account (4.6.5(1)).
- Verra may specify thresholds or timeframes, for example the total number of incremental retirements and the time between the first and the last (4.6.5(2)).
Retire and cancel are different things
Every VCU on the registry has a status of active, retired or cancelled, and each word has a specific meaning in Verra's definitions. Cancellation may be started by the account holder, by another greenhouse gas (GHG) programme the holder takes part in, or by Verra itself, for example when units are converted into another form of credit.
Why staged retirement helps a buyer
A buyer reporting a year of emissions may want to retire units as each quarter closes. Staged retirement lets you do that from one holding. Keep the retirement record for each tranche: the registry records the details of every retirement. Our reading: because Verra can cap instalments or the time between them, ask Verra's current thresholds before you plan a multi-year schedule.
Example with simple numbers
- A buyer holds 1,000 VCUs and plans a claim of 400 for the first half of the year and 600 for the second.
- Retire 400 in July, designating those VCUs in the account.
- Retire the remaining 1,000 less 400 = 600 in January, subject to any limit Verra has set on instalments or timing.
Numbers are an example.
