Should we count emissions from video calls and streaming at work?
The laptops and office network are already in your electricity bill, so they are counted in Scope 2. Data centre energy for the call service sits in the provider's footprint and, if material, your Scope 3 purchased services. For most offices it is small next to travel avoided.
Where it falls
- Office devices and Wi-Fi: Scope 2 on your bill.
- Staff working from home: Scope 3 Category 7, optional.
- Cloud and meeting services: Scope 3 Category 1.
Keep it in proportion
A call that replaces a flight saves far more than it emits. Report the flight data properly before refining call emissions.
