How does a Zhangjiagang electric arc furnace rebar mill work out its CBAM figure?
Add the direct emissions of melting and rolling: electrode carbon, charge carbon, natural gas and any lime calcined on site. Add embedded emissions of any pig iron or DRI bought in. Scrap enters at zero. Divide by tonnes of rebar. Grid electricity is not counted for steel.
Direct emissions
- Graphite electrode consumption.
- Charge carbon and foaming carbon.
- Natural gas or oil in ladle heaters and reheating furnaces.
Inputs
- Scrap: zero embedded emissions.
- Pig iron, hot briquetted iron or DRI: embedded emissions as precursors, from the supplier or a default value.
- Ferro-manganese: a precursor; silico-manganese is not a CBAM good.
Per tonne
Divide total direct and precursor emissions by tonnes of rebar produced in the period, and keep production and stock records that match shipments.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel, electricity and production documents into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions an EU importer asks for.
