Vietnam Textile Factories: Carbon Footprint Data EU Buyers Ask For
Updated 2026-10-11.
Vietnam's textile and garment exports reached an estimated US$46 billion in 2025 (VITAS), and EU brands reporting under CSRD now need each supplier's facility emissions. A Vietnamese factory can answer most requests with 12 months of electricity and fuel bills, the official national grid factor, and a clear allocation per product.
At a glance
| Item | Detail |
|---|
| Vietnam textile and garment exports, 2025 | About US$46 billion (VITAS estimate) |
| Vietnam grid factor, 2024 | About 0.68 tCO2e per MWh (study with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) |
| Official source to cite | Annual grid factor announced by the Department of Climate Change |
| Request ceiling for suppliers with 1,000 or fewer employees | Voluntary VSME-based standard (Directive (EU) 2026/470) |
| CBAM | Does not apply to textiles |
Worked example: Scope 2 for a sewing and finishing plant
| Step | Value |
|---|
| Grid electricity in a year | 5,000 MWh |
| Grid factor (about 0.68 tCO2e per MWh, 2024) | 0.68 |
| Scope 2 (location-based) | ≈ 3,400 tCO2e |
| Garments produced | 8 million pieces |
| Scope 2 per garment | ≈ 0.43 kgCO2e |
Replace the factor with the official Department of Climate Change value for the reporting year when it is published, and note the source in your report. Calculate yours from bills on the Senseible homepage.
What to include in a buyer data pack
- Facility Scope 1 (boilers, generators, company vehicles) and Scope 2 (grid electricity), with factors and sources.
- Renewable electricity: rooftop solar generation and any certificates, reported separately (market-based Scope 2).
- Allocation method per product: by mass, pieces or machine hours.
- Reporting period and the documents behind each figure.
Frequently asked questions
Should I report location-based or market-based Scope 2?
Report location-based (grid factor) always, and market-based too if you have renewable contracts or certificates. See market-based vs location-based Scope 2.
Does rooftop solar reduce my figure?
Yes. Self-generated solar you consume reduces grid electricity, so Scope 2 falls.
What if a buyer asks for a product carbon footprint?
Start from facility Scope 1 and 2, then add fabric, trims and transport. The product carbon footprint calculator follows ISO 14067.
