Which Bureau of Energy Efficiency Alwar efficient motor report fits my oil mill: expeller 30, 50 or 75 horse power, or kolhu 40 or 50?
Five Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) Alwar reports price a new motor for an expeller or kolhu at rupees (Rs) 0.64 to 1.88 lakh, paying back in 1.49 to 2.19 years. The opening table of the 40 horse power (HP) kolhu report repeats the 50 HP kolhu figures.
The five reports
- Expeller 30 HP: 22 kilowatts (kW) drawn, motor efficiency 84% to 92.8%, saves 2.09 kW. 10 hours, 300 days: 6,259 kilowatt hours (kWh), Rs 0.30 lakh, for Rs 0.64 lakh. Payback 2.13 years.
- Expeller 50 HP: 37 kW, 85% to 93.6%, saves 3.40 kW. 10 hours: 10,199 kWh, Rs 0.49 lakh, for Rs 1.07 lakh. 2.19 years.
- Expeller 75 HP: 56 kW, 85% to 94.2%, saves 5.47 kW. 16 hours: 26,252 kWh, Rs 1.26 lakh, for Rs 1.88 lakh. 1.49 years.
- Kolhu 40 HP: 30 kW, 82% to 92.8%, saves 3.61 kW. 10 hours: 10,815 kWh, Rs 0.52 lakh, for Rs 0.85 lakh. 1.63 years.
- Kolhu 50 HP: 37 kW, 83% to 93.6%, saves 4.19 kW. 10 hours: 12,571 kWh, Rs 0.60 lakh, for Rs 1.07 lakh. 1.77 years.
- Every sheet uses Rs 4.80 a kWh and 300 working days. In these mills the kolhu is the first press and its oil cake goes on to the expeller.
The 40 HP kolhu summary
Its opening table gives Rs 1.07 lakh, 12,571 kWh, Rs 0.60 lakh and 1.77 years, identical to the 50 HP kolhu report. Its own annexure, the sheet that does the sum, gives Rs 0.85 lakh, 10,815 kWh, Rs 0.52 lakh and 1.63 years. The annexure adds up: 3.61 kW x 10 hours x 300 days is about 10,830 kWh, and 10,815 x Rs 4.80 is Rs 0.52 lakh. Use the annexure figures for a 40 HP kolhu.
Why the 75 HP motor pays back first
Hours, not the motor. The 75 HP sheet runs 16 hours a day and the others 10. At 10 hours the same 5.47 kW saving would give 16,410 kWh, Rs 0.79 lakh, and a payback near 2.4 years, no better than the others. Read your own running hours off the mill's meter or log before you read any payback.
The efficiency gain is 8.6 to 10.8 percentage points in every report. The kW drawn is the sheet's assumption; clamp-meter your motor under load, because the saving scales with it.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) in the reports
Printed: 5 tonnes (30 HP), 8 (50 HP expeller), 21 (75 HP) and 10 for the kolhu summaries, about 0.8 kilograms a kWh. At the grid factor in the example below, the 40 HP kolhu saving is 7.3 tonnes and the 50 HP kolhu 8.5.
75 HP expeller motor, rechecked
- Input at 85% efficiency: 56 kW; new motor at 94.2%: 56 x 85 / 94.2 = 50.53 kW
- Saving: 5.47 kW x 16 hours x 300 days = 26,256 kWh (report: 26,252)
- Money: 26,252 x Rs 4.80 = Rs 1.26 lakh; Rs 1.88 lakh / Rs 1.26 lakh = 1.49 years
- At 10 hours a day: 16,410 kWh, Rs 0.79 lakh, 2.4 years
- CO2: 26,252 x 0.675 = 17.7 tonnes a year (estimate; report says 21)
Grid factor 0.675 kilograms of CO2 a kWh, Central Electricity Authority financial year 2025-26, an estimate.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads electricity bills into monthly kWh and carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) at the grid factor for the bill's year. The bill shows the whole mill's electricity, not one motor's, so a motor's saving needs its own meter reading alongside.
